A balanced chemical reaction is an equation that has equal numbers of each type of atom on both sides of the arrow.

A chemical equation is a written symbolic representation of a chemical reaction. The reactant chemical(s) are given on the left-hand side and the product chemical(s) on the right-hand side.

The law of conservation of mass states that atoms can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, so the number of atoms that are present in the reactants has to balance the number of atoms that are present in the products.

CHAPTER 8 How do Organisms Reproduce? Bid us ask a more basic question - why do organisms reproduce. of in un throduction is not necessary to maintain the life of an individual an wintition. or exeretion. On the other hand, If an thdividual organtsm is ang to create more Individuals, a lot of Its energy will be spent in the pes so why should an individual organism waste enersy on a procese does not need to stay alive? It would be Interesting to discuss the sogle answers in the classroom: Whetever the answer to this question, It is obvious that we notice penisits because they reproduce. If there were to be only one, nonproducing member of a particular kind, it is doubtful that we would son nodiced its existence. It is the large numbers of onganisms beionging y tingle species that bring them to our nouce. How do we know that go dificrent indiudual organisms belong to the same species? Usually. a sy this because new Individuals that look very much like themselves. B. DO ORGANISMS CREATE EXACT COPIES OF THEMSELVES? Organisms look similar because their body designs are similar. If body designs are to be similar, the blueprints for these designs should be similar. Thus, reproduction at its most basic level will involve making zpies of the blueprints of body design. In Class DX, we learnt that the thrwnosomes in the nucleus of a cell contain information for inheritance dieatures from parents to next generation in the form of DNA (Deoxyribo Sucteic Acid) molecules. The DNA in the cell nucleus is the information surce for making proteins. If the information is changed, different proteins will be made. Different protelns will eventually lead to altered body designs. Therefore, a basic event in reproduction is the creation of a DNA oop. Cells use chemical reactions to bulld coples of their DNA. This zrates two coples of the DNA in a reproducing cell, and they will need to be separated from each other. However, keeping one copy of DNA in the oxginal cell and simply pushing the other one out would not work.
