As the coronavirus cases tally continues to climb in India, the State governments and administrations announced the updates in the temporary school closure in their respective states. The decision came in order to curb the further spread of a highly contagious new variant of coronavirus, Omicron, among the unvaccinated population, that is, children and adolescents below 18 years.
Recently, PM Narendra Modi announced the rolling out of the vaccination program for the population of the age group 15-18 years starting from January 1, 2022. This is given a push to the biggest immunization program of the country and prepares a larger population to fight against the coronavirus, be it Delta or Omicron variant.
Schools had reopened recently only to shut down again in view of the emergence of the so-called third wave of coronavirus in the country.
The government and administration of states and union territories with the high number of Omicron cases like Maharashtra and Delhi announced the curfew along with the closure of schools at various levels a few days ago.
On similar lines, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Bihar are among other states where the state governments have implemented the curbs to contain the virus spread.

Schools shut for two weeks in Karnataka!
Beginning with the state where the first Omicron case was reported first. Karnataka government has rolled out new coronavirus guidelines unfolding their decision to shut schools in Bengaluru for two weeks after witnessing a surge in the number of Covid-19 infected individuals in the state. The announcement stated the suspension of offline classes for two weeks except for Class 10th & 12th, as per the state health department.
Delhi closes school till further orders
The Delhi government was the first to announce the closure of the schools. The government had asked the educational institutions, including schools to remain shut from January 3 until further orders.
After reporting 464 Omicron cases in the national capital as of January 5, the Delhi government has asked the school administration/principals to update the status of vaccinated students on Google Tracker on a daily basis and convey the same to the education department. This has been announced to track and ensure the vaccination of children of the eligible age group.
Maharashtra’s Mumbai closes schools till Jan 31!
The state with the highest number of Omicron cases in the country, Maharashtra, has permitted the local administration to take the decision on the matter as per the situation. In the latest, the civic body in Mumbai announced the closure of schools of all mediums till January 31, except for classes 10th and 12th.
Earlier, the Pune administration decided to close schools for Classes from 1st to 8th in the district till January 30.
Schools closed till Republic Day in Goa!
Goa, following the New Year celebrations and reporting a Covid-19 positivity rate of 10.7 per cent, has announced that the schools will be shut till January 26.
As per the news reports, physical classes will be discontinued in schools for classes 8 and 9. While the students of classes 11th and 12th need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to attend classes.
Schools Closed till Jan 15 in Poll-bound UP
Uttar Pradesh, which is preparing to witness elections in the coming days, recorded a steady increase in coronavirus cases. In the wake of this, the state government issued an order to close the schools up to class 10 till January 15
Bihar Imposes Fresh Curb
Schools will remain closed for pre-school & classes 1st to 8th. School authority to continue online classes for students’ goodwill. In contrast, classes 9th to 12th will function on 50% capacity. These restrictions will come into effect from tomorrow and will remain till January 21.
Punjab closes schools till further notice
Like other governments going into elections, the Punjab government also decided to close schools as the Covid-19 and Omicron cases continue to rise in the state.
District with 4% Covid-19 positivity rate shuts schools in Chhattisgarh
The Bhupesh Baghel led-government in Chhattisgarh has ordered the administration to shut schools in the districts with a COVID-19 positivity rate of 4% and above. This is applicable until further notice.
Primary classes halt in Odisha
As the schools were shut in Odisha due to Covid-19, the state government continues its decision of not reopening schools for students of classes 1 to 5.
Telangana schools to shut from Saturday till January 16
After reviewing the situation in the state, Telangana declared holidays at all educational institutions starting from January 8 till January 16.
Classes 10 & 12 to continue in Tamil Nadu, remaining classes suspended

The Haryana government has announced the closing of schools till January 12. The state government is focusing on vaccinating the now eligible population, that is, children between 15-18 years of age. They are aiming to vaccinate them by January 10.
