The Physics Aptitude Test (PAT) is a subject-specific admissions test. How long is the PAT?

The exam will be two-hour long. It tests a student’s ability in both maths and physics. Also, students who wishes to study physics at Oxford, compulsorily have to take the test.

How hard is the PAT?

What is the Registration Process for the PAT Oxford?

How to prepare for the PAT test?

Yes, you can take calculators for the test. Whereas it is advisable to check the guidelines about the usage in the PAT. Candidates should also note that they are not allowed to take formula sheet, tables and data books into the test.

How can I get the results for the test?

Results are not published automatically. They are requested as a part of usual feedback process. Admissions tutors will receive the results of all tests directly in time. Then they will make their short listing decisions in the month of November. Hence, candidates need not have to submit their results separately.

What are the changes made so far to the PAT exam?

The 2021 test format will take the same format as the past papers from 2018, 2019 and 2020. However, when preparing the past year papers will still be of same use.
Calculators are allowed since 2018.
The maths and physics sections were mixed up in 2017 rather than being the two distinct sections.
The multiple choice questions was remove in 2015 and then reintroduced in 2017.
From 2015 the long physics problems worth 20 marks were remove and shorter questions worth less than 10 marks introduced.

What is the syllabus of mathematics content of physics aptitude test?

For Elementary Mathematics:

Knowledge of elementary mathematics, in particular topics in arithmetic, geometry including coordinate geometry and probability. Questions may need some manipulation of mathematical expressions in physics context.
For Algebra

  • Knowledge of the properties of polynomials including the solutions of quadratics by using formula or factorising.
  • Transformation of variables.
  • Graph sketching including the use of differentiation so as to find stationary points.Solutions to inequality.
  • Properties of logarithms and exponentials and how to combine logarithms.
  • Elementary trigonometry including relationships between sine, cosine and tangent.
  • Use of binomial expansion for expressions
  • Knowledge of formulae for the sum of arithmetic and geometric progressions to n terms.
  • For Calculus

  • Differentiation to find the slope of a curve, and the location of maxima and minima.
  • Differentiation and integration of polynomials including fractional and negative powers.
  • Simplifying integrals by symmetry arguments including the use of even and odd functions.
  • Integration as the reverse of differentiation and as the finding the area of the curve.
