3. Motion of Rockets and Jet-planes: The working of a Force on bullet Force on gun rocket is also based on Newton's third law. A rocket contains a combustion chamber having a hole at its bottom (Fig. 2.18). When the fuel burns in the form of hot and highly compressed gases, these are made to escape forcefully from the bottom through a nozzle in the downward direction. As a reaction, the rocket moves upwards with the same force. When fuel burns rapidly, the hot gases emerge forcefully from the bottom in backward Fig. direction and the rocket moves in forward direction. The force exerted by rocket on gases is action force, the force exerted by gases on rocket is reaction force. It is the reaction force on rocket in forward direction due to which the rocket moves. In a jet plane, the burnt gases rush out of a jet at the rear end (back end) of the aircraft. As a reaction, the jet plane moves forward with an equal force. The Case of Hose Pipe: To put out fire, the firemen direct a powerful stream of water on fire, from a hose pipe. As the water rushes out at a great speed from the hose pipe in the forward direction (action), the hose pipe tends to move backwards, Force on due to an equal force of reaction. That is why, the firemen have to hold the hose gases pipe strongly. 5. Man and Boat: When a man jumps out of a boat to the bank of the river, the boat Fig. moves backward (in opposite direction of man). Because when man steps out of the boat (Fig. 2.19), he presses the boat in backward direction
