Italy has three active volcanoes, namely Mount Vesuvius, Mount Etna and Stromboli. All three are composite volcanoes, also known as stratovolcanoes. Mount Vesuvius is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years and is considered one of the world's most hazardous volcanoes due to the large population living nearby. Mount Etna, located in Sicily, is the largest among the three. Stromboli is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Sicily. Mount Vesuvius is actually a somma-stratovolcano which means it is a volcanic caldera partially filled by a new central cone. Stratovolcanoes are characterized by their steep profile and periodic explosive eruptions with lava and ash. Overall, all three active volcanoes in Italy are composite/stratovolcanoes.
