Serum typing is not routinely performed on cord cells because:
- Wharton's jelly interferes with antigen typing.
- Infant antigens are not fully expressed until 4-6 months of age.
- Weak expression of antigen can cause discrepancies.
- Detectable antibodies in the infant's serum are usually of maternal origin.
