10.4.1 Meiosis I Prophase I: Pioplias of the first theioted divisiont is typically Ionger and more complex when compared to prophase of mitomity. It has becto funther subdivided into the lollawirg five phases based on chromo-omul During leptotene siage the ohromosertina become gradiualy visitole 13nder the liglit micrasmpe. The compaction uf cirromptames conitinus throughout leptotene. This is followed by the senand atpe of prophase and this process of association is ealled synitys/s. Sueh palicd chromosomes are called homologods curumosomes. Flectron micrographs of thls stage indicate that chromosome gynapsis is accompanied by the formation of onmplex structure callert symaptonerdal complex. The camplex formed by a pus of syrnizsi-d homologon chromosomes is called a bivarent or a lemact firmerer prophase 1 are relatively shor-lived compared io the nexa syape that is pachytene. During this stage. the four chromatids of each blvalent ehromosomes becomes distanct and ciearly appears as teliguls This slage is characterised by the appearance of recombination nodules, thr sires at which crossing uver occurs between ron-sister etummatd of the homologous chromosomes. Crossing over is the exohange of genctio material between two homologous chromosarnes. Crossing dver is aiso an enzyme-mediated prociss and the enzme involved is calleci recombinase Crossing over leads to recombination of gentetic raaterial on the two chromosnmes. Recombination between homologous chromosomes is completed by the end of pachytene. leaving the chromosomes limked at the sites of crossing over. The bersinning of diplotene is recognised by the dissolution of the synaptoriemal camplex and the lenderey of the recombined homologous chromosones of the bivalenis 10 separate from each other except at the sites of crossovers. These X-shated suruciures, are called chiasmata. In pocytes of some vertebrates. diplotene can last. for months or years. The litial stage of meiotic prophase I is dialkinesis. This is marked by termmalisation of chasmata. During this phase the chromosomes are fully condensed and the meiolic spindle is assembled to prepare the homologous chrornosomes for separation. By the end of diakinesis, the nucleolus disappears and the nuelear envelope also breaks down. Diakinesis represents transidion to metaphase.
