Chapter Eleven: The Muscular System and Muscle Structure and Function EXERCISE 11.9: MOTOR UNITS AND MUSCLE FATIGUE (HUMAN SUBJECT) To start the first trial, have the subject pick up the weight so that their arm is positioned parallel to the floor, and then hold the weight in that position for as long as possible. As soon as the subject gets the upper limb into position, start a stopwatch to measure the time taken to reach the point of fatigue. Observe the subject's upper limb for signs of fatigue, such as shaking, trembling, and an inability to hold the weight steadily. The time to fatigue will be measured until the subject can no longer hold the weight in position, i.e. the upper limb falls below 90 degrees. Stop the timer and have the subject lay the weight down. Record both the weight used and the time to fatigue in table 11.7. Trial 2: Have the subject repeat steps 1-3 using a lighter weight. For example, if a 25-lb weight was used previously, now use a 10-lb weight for trial 2. Again, record the weight and time to fatigue in table 11.7. Before beginning, state a hypothesis regarding the relationship between force generation and muscle fatigue. Repeat the process with successive trials until all available weights have been used. At that time, do one last trial having the subject hold his or her arm out without holding any weight at all. For each trial, record the weight used and the time to fatigue. The weight for the last trial should be zero. Note any observations and/or initial thoughts about the outcome of this experiment in the space provided. Obtain the following hand barbell of the following weight increments: 1 lb, 2.5 lbs, 10 lbs, and 25 lbs. Choose a volunteer to be the subject. The subject will need to initially guess the maximum weight that he or she will be able to hold in an outstretched arm for a period of time. Begin with the heaviest weight that the subject can comfortably hold, even if only for a few seconds. Table 11.7: Results Weight (lb) Time to Fatigue (min) It is possible to have more than five trials.
