Question
Question asked by Filo student
Explain and summarize the contents of this slide in relation to nucleotides and proteins (cell biology). Structural diversity offers functional versatility.
- Consist of one or more polypeptide chains - Our cells may have as many as 10,000 different sized/shaped proteins (corresponding to expressed genes).
- Proteins may perform almost any function, assuming a wide range of structures. The central feature is that they engage in multi-prong interactions, forming a complex.
- Polypeptide is a polymer of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. It is synthesized by ribosomes according to mRNA codes.
- Enzymes catalyze reactions, such as alcohol dehydrogenase.
- Proteins also have structural functions, acting as a matrix or skeleton.
- They can act as gene regulators, transporters, transcription factors, hormones, and form pores.
