Question asked by Filo student

Comparison studies on Yeast cultured in anaerobic conditions and aerobic conditions were done. Data was collected on (1) the rate of cell division (2) the rate of glucose consumption (3) the intracellular ATP:ADP ratio. Results are as follow: (1) the rate of cell division - in aerobic conditions: cell division increased dramatically (2) the rate of glucose consumption- In aerobic conditions, Glucose consumption decreased sharply (3) the intracellular ATP:ADP ratio - Intracellular ATP:ADP ratios increased significantly (from 2:1 in the absence of oxygen to 10:1 in the presence of oxygen) How did the mitochondria cause the sharp decrease in glucose utilization and increase in ATP concentrations in aerobic conditions?
