Mechanical waves are of two types -
(1) Transverse waves - they have vibrations of medium, perpendiculars to the direction of propagation of wave .
(2) Longitudinal waves - they have vibrations of medium, parallel to the direction of propagation of wave .
Sound waves have vibrations parallel to the direction of wave motion, therefore they are declared as longitudinal waves .
