The National Movement (1923-1939) INTRODUCTION When the non-cooperation move-ment was suddenly withdrawn, the national movement received a major setback. The people were disappointed and frustrated at these. In several parts of the country, communal riots were broken out. The Hindu - Muslim unity reached at its lowest ebbs, which was very strong during the Non-Cooperation movement. No movement was left with to mobilise the people. However, this condition persisted only for a short period of time. Soon new movements were started, which decisively altered the course of freedom struggle. The Swaraj Party (1923) The Congress got divided into the two groups on withdrawal of the NonCooperation movement. The group led by C.R. Das, Motilal Nehru and Vallabhbhai Patel, wanted to end the boycott of the legislative councils. They realized that if the congress kept on boycotting the elections, people remained loyal to the British and it would get elected and then the government would enjoy the absolute powers to do anything it wanted. They wished the congress to participate in the election process, join the Motilal Nehru CR. Das government and then work to destroy the functioning of the legislative from inside. Therefore, these prochangers wanted to enter the legislatures and then make it impossible for the government to function by opposing all policies. The second group non-changers, as they were popularly known, opposed joining the councils. This group was for undertaking a constructive programme. In both the groups his name is there. C. Rajagopalacharya and Rajendra Prasad led this group. The pro-changers founded the congress Khilafat Swarajya party, popularly known as Swaraj party in 1923. The Swarajist were allowed to contest the elections under the banner of the congress party. Thus, the Swaraj party constructed the elections and had a handful of seats in the legislatures. By opposing each and every British move, they made it extremely difficult for the British to get their policies and proposals approved in the legislatures. Gandhiji had been sentenced to six years of imprisonment after the Non-Cooperation movement. But he was released before the jail ended (in February 1924). Khadi was promoted as a key to the liberation of the poor from the British economic activities. With its introdu-ction, the poor were provided with the means of livelihood. The people in the different parts of India very deeply understood this reality. In order to make Khadi popular, the All India Spinners' Association and many Khadi Bhandars were set up. Alongwith Khadi, the Charkha became a symbol of India's freedom struggle. Movements by Peasants and Workers Numerous peasants revolts were broken out in the country ever since the British rule had been established. At the time of Non-Cooperation movement also, the peasants had been active participants. There were struggle by the Kisan Sabhas against the British polices and the British agents in India - called Zamindars. A few of 48 Social science-8
