CHAPTER 2 Motion 2.3 Concept of Weight 2.1 What is Motion? 2.4 Difference between Mass and Weight 2.2 Types of Motion - Everything in the universe is in motion. We can easily observe certain motions like the motion of a car on the road, motion of the blades of a fan, motion of a running athlete, to and fro motion of the pendulum of a clock, motion of a merry-go-round etc. In all these me we can define motion as a change in the position of an object with respect to time. - However, there are certain motions that we cannot see, like the motion of earth moving around the Sun. This is because even though an object is in motion, it appears to be at rest with respect to the objects, which are moving at the same speed or along with it. For example: When you look out of a moving car, everything around you seems to be passing by and you can feel that you are in motion. Now, if you look at the person driving the same car, he appears to be at rest. This is because he is moving at the same speed as you. Hence, motion is a relative term. Motion is a change in the position of an object at a particular time with respect to another object. - An object is said to be at rest, if there is no change in its position at a particular time with respect to another object. - In a moving car, you are in motion with respect to the trees that you are passing by but you are not in motion Fig. 2.1: Person in a vehicle is in motion with respect to with respect to the person object (tree) and is at rest with respect to Person driving the car.
