Longitudinal waves are like mechanical waves which need the medium to propagate. These waves cannot travel through a vacuum. A vacuum is an area where there are no liquids, gases or solids of any kind. That is, there is absolutely in a vacuum. If there are no substances, then there are no particles for the sound waves to vibrate, which means the sound waves cannot travel.
