The accumulation of molecular species at the surface rather than in the bulk of a solid or liquid is termed adsorption. There are mainly two types of adsorption of gases on solids. If accumulation of gas on the surface of a solid occurs on account of weak van der Waals’ forces, the adsorption is termed as physical adsorption or physisorption. When the gas molecules or atoms are held to the solid surface by chemical bonds, the adsorption is termed chemical adsorption or chemisorption.
(A) Physical adsorption involves van der Waals' forces, so any number of layers may be formed one over the other on the surface of the adsorbent. Chemical adsorption takes place as a result of the reaction between adsorbent and adsorbate. When the surface of adsorbent is covered with one layer, no further reaction can take place. Hence, 'Adsorption may be monolayered or multi-layered' . This statement is true.
(B) Particle size of the adsorbent affects the amount of adsorption. Smaller is the particle size of the adsorbent, higher is the amount of adsorption and vice versa. This is because smaller particle size of the adsorbent corresponds to larger surface area. Hence, the statement 'Particle size of adsorbent will not affect the amount of adsorption' is false.
(C) An increase in pressure decreases the volume of gas and thus increases the adsorption of gas molecules. Conversely, a decrease in pressure will cause the removal of gas molecules from the solid surface. Hence, the statement, 'Increase of pressure increases the amount of adsorption' is true.
(D) Thus, adsorption is inversely proportional to the temperature. This is true for physical adsorption. In chemical adsorption due to the high energy of activation, the extent of adsorption increases initially and decreases as the temperature increases further. Hence, the statement, 'Increase of temperature may decrease the amount of adsorption' is true.
Hence, the statement 'Particle size of adsorbent will not affect the amount of adsorption' is false.

ble 6.2: Carbon-Halogen Bond Lengths, Bond Enthalpies and Dipole Moments The hydroxyl group of an alcohol is replaced by halogen on reaction with. concentrated halogen acids. phosphorus halides or thionyl chloride: Thlonyl chloride is preferred because in this reaction alkyl halide is formed along with gases and . The two gaseous products are escapable, hence, the reaction gives pure alkyl halides. The reactions of primary and secondary alcohols with require the presence of a catalyst, With tertiary alcohols, the reaction is condicted by simply shaking the aloohol with concentrated at room temperature. Constant boiling with is used for preparing alkyl bromide. Good yields of may be obtained by heating alcohols with sodium or potassium lodide in 9596 orthophosphoric acid. The order of reactivity of alcohols with a given haloacid is . Phosphorus tribromide and trilodide are usually generated in situ (produced in the reaction mixture) by the reaction of red phosphorus with bromine and lodine respectively. The preparation of alkyl chloride is carried out either by passing dry hydrogen chloride gas through a solution of alcohol or by heating a mixture of alcohol and concentrated aqueous halogen acid. The above methods are not applicable for the preparation of aryl halides because the carbon-oxygen bond in phenols has a partial double bond character and is difficult to break being stronger than a single bond. (I) From alkanes by free radical halogenation Free radical chlorination or bromination of alkanes gives a complex mixture of isomeric mono- and polyhaloalkanes, which is difficult to
