What is KVPY and the SA, SB, SX streams?
KVPY or the KISHORE VAIGYANIK PROTSAHAN YOJANA FELLOWSHIP AWARD - 2020, is a program launched by the Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology. The aim is to encourage the nation’s students into considering research-based career trajectories in the areas of the sciences. The exam is conducted to offer scholarships to students up till the pre-PhD level. On clearing the KVPY exam, students become eligible for direct admission into the nation’s top Science institutes like the IISc and the IISER.
The exam has been divided into three streams - SA, SB, and SX.
SA stream - Under the SA stream students enrolled in class 11 in the current year are eligible for the exam. The student must have an aggregate of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) in Science and Math subjects in their 10th class. Students selected under the SA stream get a fellowship when they enroll in Basic Science undergraduate courses in the academic year alongside securing an aggregate of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) in their 12th class.
Stream SB - The SB stream is for students in the first year of an undergraduate program having secured 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) minimum in Basic Sciences (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in their class 12th exams. In addition to that, the students must also secure a minimum of 60%(50% for SC/ST/PWD) in their B.SC/B.Math/B.Stat/etc first year final examination before taking the KVPY exam.
Stream SX: Under the SX stream, eligibility lies with the students in their 12th standard during the current year and are aspiring to join the undergraduate program. The students should have registered a minimum aggregate of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) in their class 10 Science subjects. Under this stream, students activate the fellowship only if they join in the course and have a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) in their Class 12 Maths and Science subjects.
