There are several Education Boards in India. These boards can act at a national level eg: CBSE or at the state level eg: UPMSP. They perform functions like deciding the complete curriculum, conducting examinations etc.. for students in schools all across India. National Education Boards in India

The education board in India is rather diverse and equally qualitative when it comes to providing education. School education in India is provided by various academic boards with their presence at state level and national level.

There are three national boards in our country namely:

  • Central board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
  • Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)
  • National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)

The CBSE is a National Education Board with over 24,000 schools in India and approximately 240 schools in 26 foreign countries affiliated with it. There are a total of 1,248 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), 26,054 Government/Aided schools, 16,741 independent schools, 661 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas & 71 Central Tibetan schools as of August 2021.

CBSE conducts board exams for classes 10th and 12th in February/March every year. In 2021-22, CBSE is conducting boards twice a year because of pandemics caused by a coronavirus. This board offers various subjects to its students after class 10th in Science, Commerce and Humanities stream.

Some of the popular national level entrance tests conducted by CBSE are Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test, Central Teacher Eligibility Test, etc.

Objective: CBSE always works with an aim to provide stress-free education to its students by adopting innovative teaching methods infused with psychological and instructive principles.

Syllabus: CBSE syllabus more or less focuses on preparing students for Engineering and Medical entrance exams. All national entrance examinations are conducted as per the CBSE syllabus. The board emphasises the use of NCERT Books which form the basis of all entrance examinations conducted in India.

Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)

CISCE is a privately held national-level board of school education in India that conducts the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examinations for Classes 10th and 12th respectively. It was established in 1958 and over 2,300 schools in India and abroad are affiliated with it. The Council conducts board examinations every year in February and March. In 2021-22, CISCE is conducting boards twice a year because of the pandemic caused by Covid. This Board holds examinations for regular students only.

Objective: The main objective of ICSE is to provide high quality education to students by following a practical approach. It encourages students to choose across diverse streams/subjects for Class 12th by putting equal emphasis on science, arts and language subjects, especially English.

Syllabus: CISCE syllabus is more vast and comprehensive in comparison with CBSE. It has been structured in a way to impart practical knowledge and build analytical skills required for the overall development of a student.

Examinations: The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations conducts three examinations, namely: the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE –Class 10); The Indian School Certificate (ISC – Class 12) & the Certificate in Vocational Education (CVE – Year 12). The C.V.E. course is intended to prepare candidates for particular vocations.

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

NIOS is the board of education under the Union Government of India. It was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) of the Government of India in 1989 to provide education to all segments of society under the motivation to increase literacy and aimed forward for flexible learning.

The NIOS is a national board administering examinations for Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations similar to the CBSE and the CISCE. It offers vocational courses after high school as well. NIOS enrolls about 3,50,000 students annually which makes it one of the largest open schooling system in the world. The board conducts board exams twice a year in March/April and September/October.

State Boards for Education in India

State boards are specific to each State and follows different syllabus and grading methodology. Every state board has its own educational approach that causes a variance in the syllabus from one state to another state in India.

Objective: It focuses on state-related topics and content of local relevance which helps students in preparing for state-level engineering and medical entrance tests. 

Syllabus: The syllabus is usually limited when compared with other boards. Regional languages and culture have a prominent place in the syllabus. Also some state boards have ordered all their schools to follow NCERT books only which are important for students to prepare for pan India Examinations.

Examinations:  For Class 10th the students appear for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and the Class 12th students appear for the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) exams. 

Punjab School Education Board (PSEB)

Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) organizes and conducts the PSEB exams for Classes 10th & 12th every year in the state of Punjab. Headquartered in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, PSEB is a school education board for the Punjab state. The board was founded in 1969 under a legislative act of Government of Punjab. The board is headed by a Chairman whose term lasts three years. The Chairman reports to the Secretary of School Education in the Government of Punjab and currently, the Chairman of the Board is Yog Raj Sharma.

Board of School Education Haryana

The Board of School Education Haryana (HBSE) organizes and conducts the HBSE board exams for Classes 10th & 12th every year in the state of Haryana. As per the sources, around 3,672 schools are affiliated with HBSE. Around 6 Lakh students sit for the exams conducted by the HBSE board. A total of 3,37,691 students of Class 10th and over 2,25,000 Class 12th students appeared for the board exams in 2020. HBSE employs more than 650 officials & the chairman of the board is Dr Jagbir Singh.

Bihar School Examination Board

The BSEB conducts Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) Board examinations in government and private schools of Bihar. Every year the exams are generally conducted in the month of February. This state board also conducts Supplementary School Examinations in the month of May on the basis of course/syllabus announced by the State Government.

West Bengal Board of Secondary Education

West Bengal Madhyamik Examination is a state-level exam for class 10 students and is organized by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) through the schools affiliated with the Board. The examination application process is carried out through schools. WBBSE sets the syllabus, exam pattern and exam dates for all students. They should go through it thoroughly and practice solving previous years question papers to ace the exams. The West Bengal Class 10th examinations are held for subjects like English, Life science, Physical science (a combination of physics and chemistry), History, Geography, Mathematics, and the first and second languages.
