Why do neurons not have division power?

Text SolutionText solutionverified iconVerified

There is absence of centrioles in the nerve cells and because of this they are unable to perform mitosis and meiosis and hence these cells do not divide. But nerve cells get longer without dividing and they do not divide during their lifetime.

PhysioEx 9.1 PhysioEx 9.1 Chapter Integration Applying what you have learned What's wrong with me? Sherry, a 43-year-old mother of two, has been experiencing some slightly troublesome physical and mental problems that began about 8 months ago. She had been a physically fit 120-lb person with a bright, happy, and cheerful disposition all her adult life. Within the past few months, however, her husband has repeatedly commented that she overreacts to otherwise normal family situations and seems irritated by the slightest problems. She has also lost a considerable amount of weight, even though her diet and exercise levels haven't changed. Because Sherry just isn't feeling right, she decides to make an appointment with her family physician. Sherry tells her physician that she has been restless, anxious, and quite irritable lately. She is having a hard time sleeping, complains of diarrhea and weight loss, and has an increased appetite without weight gain. Visual examination of her neck reveals an enlargement of the right anterior neck. During the examination, her physician notices a higher-than-normal heart rate and a fine tremor in her outstretched fingers. Although further clinical tests are necessary, the doctor suspects hyperthyroidism.
  1. Why does the physician suspect hyperthyroidism?
  2. Explain hyperthyroidism.
  3. What tests could the physician order to make a positive diagnosis of Sherry's condition?
  4. Which of Sherry's signs and symptoms indicate nervous system involvement?
