The shoot apical meristem (SAM) is a population of cells located at the tip of the shoot axis. It produces lateral organs, stem tissues and regenerates itself. Both shoot and root apical meristems are made during embryogenesis. In dicotyledonous plants, such as Arabidopsis, the shoot apical meristem forms centrally, between the two seed leaves, or cotyledons. Upon germination, the shoot apical meristem becomes active and resumes leaf production.
