The diploid megaspore mother cell (MMC) present in the megasporangium (ovule) undergoes meiotic division to give rise to four haploid megaspores. Out of the four megaspores, three degenerate and one functional megaspore divides by mitotic division and develops into the embryo sac, i.e. female gametophyte. The megaspore that remains functional can either be micropylar or chalazal depending upon the species.
