Infertile couples could be assisted to have children through some special methods called assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
fertilization (IVF) is the method in which the mature egg is removed from a woman's ovary, kept in a laboratory culture dish and mixed with spent from husband or donor male. The zygote or early embryos (up. to blastomeres) could then be transferred into the fallopian tube of the female (ZIFT - Zygote infra fallopian transfer) and embryos with more than 8 blastomeres, into the uterus (MT - intra uterine transfer), to complete its further development. A normal baby can be born to such a mother. Such a baby is called a test tube baby.
Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). An ovum is collected from a donor. It is mixed with 50,000 sperms and immediately transferred into the fallopian tube of another female who cannot. produce one, but can provide a suitable environment for fertilization and further development of the embryo ( ).
Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a procedure to form an embryo in the laboratory in Which a sperm is directly injected into the ovum. Then the fertilized egg is implanted into the woman's uterus.
Artificial insemination (Al) technique is used in cases when the male is unable to inseminate the female or has a very low sperm count. In this technique, the semen collected from the husband or a healthy donor is artificially introduced either into the vagina or into the uterus (LW - Intra uterine insemination) of the female.

Direction: Read the following and answer the questions from given below Seed is the basis of our agriculture. Dehydration and dormancy of mature secds are crucial for storage of secds which can be used as food throughout the year and also to raise crop in the next season. Seeds remain alive after they are dispersed for few to several years. Also number of seeds in a fruit can also vary. Can you think of some plants in which fruits contain very large number of seeds. Orchid fruits are one such category. Its each fruit contains thousands of tiny seeds which when dispersed produces thousands orchid plants. This is so fascinating as how a tiny structure can produce such a large biomass over the years. (i) Why does seed dormancy occur? (a) Due to favourable conditions (b) Due to unfavourable conditions (c) Due to embryonic conditions (d) Due to specific endosperm conditions (ii) An example of a very old viable seed excavated from Arctic Tundra in which seed gets germinated and flower after an estimated record of 10,000 years of dormancy is (a) Victoria (b) Lupinus arcticus (c) Phoenix dactylifera (d) Strobilanthes kunthiana (iii) Seed formation without fertilisation in flowering plants involves the process of (a) budding (b) somatic hybridisation (c) apomixis (d) sporulation (iv) Which of the following plants does not produce very large number of seeds? (a) Orobanche (b) Striga (c) Ficus (d) Apple (v) Assertion (A) Some fruits are seedless or contain non-viable seeds. Reason (R) They are produced without fertilisation. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of (b) Both A and R are true, but is not the correct explanation of (c) is true, but is false (d) Both A and R are false (iii) Seed formation without fertilisation in flowering plants involves the process of (a) budding (b) somatic hybridisation (c) apomixis (d) sporulation (iv) Which of the following plants does not produce very large number of seeds? You are probably acquainted with the effects of local anesthetics. While the injection of lidocaine at the dentist is unpleasant no injection would be more so. Lidocaine is a sodium channel blocker.A. Explain the absence of pain in terms of the effect of lidocaine on signal reception and transduction. The pain of the dentist’s drill is caused by trauma at the cellular level. Chemical messengers such as cytokines, serotonin, and prostaglandins are released by broken cells. The receptors for these messages of trauma are called nociceptors whose activation is transmitted to the central nervous system by specialized cells called the A and C fibres.B. The nervous system is a network of cells and tissues that is activated by these chemical messengers. Identify another system that should be activated by these messengers and support your claim by applying the idea that dynamic homeostasis is maintained by timing and coordination of regulated events.C. Chronic pain often persists after damaged tissue has healed. This pain is often accompanied by sterile inflammation with components of the innate immune system such as macrophages. Refine the model of coordinated response identified in part B to describe how chemical messengers associated with the immune response can cause chronic pain.Unlike local anesthetics general anesthetics block signal transduction of the entire central nervous system and the brain. However, while the patient is unconscious the peripheral nervous system continues to support signaling to other systems such as heart and lungs. An explanation might be that the signal in the central and peripheral nervous systems are segregated and that the latter functions without cognitive integration (thought) as the name “autonomic” implies. The respiratory center that provides autonomic control of breathing is part of the medulla oblongata.D. Create a visual representation of system composed only of the cortex, the medulla oblongata, the heart and the lungs. Using arrows describe the flow of information. Consider “holding your breath” in creating your representation. Consider why you always stop holding your breath eventually. Consider “holding your heart.” Experimental data on the voluntary control of heart rate by people who practice yoga have been reported (Raghavendra et al., International Journal of Yoga, 6, 2013; Telles et al., Integrative Physiological and Behavioral Science, 39, 2004).E. Analyze the data provided in the following sketch of blood flow, a process controlled by the autonomic nervous system, in the two ears of a rabbit (after Blessing, Trends in Neuroscience, 20, 1997) in terms of cognitive integration of the response to the stimulus provided by touching the rabbit.
