Gynogenesis is the development of an egg that is stimulated by a sperm in the absence of any participation of the sperm nucleus. Gynogenesis has been shown to be a possible alternative source for haploid production in plants, particularly in species, where androgenesis is recalcitrance or where the level of albino regenerated plants is high or due to male sterility and dioecious nature of plants. Megaspores or female gametophytes of plants can be triggered invitro to undergo sporophytic development. Production of haploid plants through gynogenesis by culturing unfertilized ovaries was first described in barley.
