.[D] Fertilisation can not take place in absence of surface water in Fucus, Funaria and Marsilea. In these organisms fertilisation occurs outside the body of female. A large number of gametes are released in the surrounding medium (e.g., water) where fertilisation takes place. Water is essential, so that male gametes can swim in water in order to reach female gamete. This type of fertilisation is called external fertilisation.
