There are three homozygous recessive mutant mouse strains I, R and S. Compared with wild-type mice, they display different sensitivities to Salmonella in food. While wild-type mice are sensitive to the bacterial intoxication, they are fine at low dose of bacterial ingestion. S strain is hypersensitive and can be killed by low dose of bacterial feeding. R strain is more resistant than wild-type mice. Only when you put high dose of Salmonella in the food would they fall sick. I strain is completely insensitive to Salmonella. They are absolutely fine even if you feed them Salmonella as bacterial pellets. When S strain or R strain animals are crossed with wild-type animals, all the F1 individuals behave just like wild-type animals. Since the mutations are not on the same chromosome, obtaining double homozygous mutant animals is possible. You obtain R+I double homozygous mutant mice and find that they are completely insensitive to Salmonella infection. You also obtain S+R double homozygous mutant mice and find that they are as resistant as R homozygous mice. a. If your cross S strain with R strain, what should be the phenotype of the F1? If you allow the F1 to intercross, what do you expect to see in the distribution of phenotypes in the F2 population? Show your deduction steps. b. Obviously the three mutations abolish different genetic activities. How are these genes regulating each other in controlling the sensitivity towards Salmonella? Show your deduction steps. c. What should the phenotype of the triple homozygous mutant I+R+S be? Why? (Answers on the next page)
