Double fertilization was discovered by Nawaschin. It was first explained in Lilium and Fritillaria. Double fertilization is a characteristic feature of angiosperms. Syngamy causes the formation of embryo, where the male and female gametes fuse. Along with that the secondary polar nuclei fuse with male gamete to form triploid endosperm. It provides the function of nourishment.
