Conjugated proteins are the proteins which are formed by the binding of a simple protein with a non-protein prosthetic group. Conjugated chromoproteins are the pigment protein complexes. Hemoglobin is one such conjugated chromoprotein. It is composed of a simple protein called “globin” and non protein iron ( ) porphyrin complex called “heme”. 100 ml of blood contains about 15g of hemoglobin. Four ions of heme can loosely bind to upto four molecules of oxygen, thus enabling hemoglobin to carry oxygen.
