Guttation is the loss or excretion of water in the form of liquid droplets from the leaves and other parts of an uninjured or intact plant. All plants do not show guttation. It is restricted to about 345 genera of herbaceous and some woody plants. Guttation occurs through special structures called hydathodes that are usually found on the margins and tips of the leaves. Common examples are found in garden nasturtium, oat and other cereals, balsam, tomato, cucurbits. Guttation usually occurs during periods of active growth when conditions favour more water absorption and less transpiration. It takes place either at night or early in the morning.
