Ammonia is first oxidised to nitrite by the bacteria Nitrosomonas and/or Nitrosococcus. The nitrite is further oxidised to nitrate with the help of the bacteria Nitrobacter, and/or Nitrocystis. These steps are called nitrification. These nitrifying bacteria are chemoautotrophs.
