A mature dicot embryo contains naturally attached two cotyledons to the embryonal axis. The portion of the embryonal axis which is above the level of cotyledons forms the epicotyl and the portion below the embryonal axis forms the hypocotyl. The terminal portion of epicotyl forms the plumule while the terminal portion of the hypocotyl forms the radicle.
