Periodic abstinence is a natural method in which the couples avoid or abstain from coitus from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle when ovulation could be expected. The effectiveness of this method is limited, because only a few women have regular menstrual cycle and the actual time of ovulation can be produced as the ovulation in humans occurs about 14 days before the onset of the next menstruation.
