10.3 सूत्री कोशिका विभाजन का महत्व सूत्री विभाजन या मध्यवर्तीय विभाजन केवल द्विगुणित कोशिकाओं में होता है। यद्यपि कुछ निम्न श्रेणी के पादपों एवं सामाजिक कीटों में अगुणित कोशिकाएं भी सूत्री विभाजन द्वारा विभाजित होती हैं। सूत्री विभाजन का एक प्राणी के जीवन में क्या महत्व है, इसको समझना काफी आवश्यक है। क्या आप कुछ ऐसे उदाहरण जानते हैं जहाँ आपने अगुणित व द्विगुणित कीटों के बारे में पढ़ा है। इस विभाजन से बनने वाली द्विगुणित संतति कोशिकाएं साधारणतया समान आनुवंशिक अवयव वाली होती है। बहुकोशिकीय जीवधारियों की वृद्धि सूत्री विभाजन के कारण होती है। कोशिका वृद्धि के परिणामस्वरूप केंद्रक व कोशिकाद्रव्य के बीच का अनुपात अव्यवस्थित हो जाता है। इसलिए यह आवश्यक हो जाता है कि कोशिका विभाजित होकर केंद्रक कोशिकाद्रव्य अनुपात को बनाए रखे। सूत्री विभाजन का एक महत्वपूर्ण योगदान यह है कि इसके द्वारा कोशिका की मरम्मत होती है। अधिचर्म की उपरी सतह की कोशिकाएं, आहार नाल की भीतरी सतह की कोशिकाएं एवं रक्त कोशिकाएं निरंतर प्रतिस्थापित होती रहती है।
